All You need to Know About CNC processing parts!

When we talk about CNC machining, we get to see that there are mainly two types of milling machines that are commonly seen being used. These are known as horizontal milling machines and vertical milling machines. A common example of it is the Bridgeport milling machine. Although the milling operations on both sides of milling machines might even vary, however, the milling machine parts that are supposed to make them up, have a lot more in common. However, there are certain parts in a milling machine that are considered to be essentials.

What is a Milling Machine?

In the case of milling machines, whether we talk about the manual ones or the CNC machines, they work in a way that they remove metals from the workpieces, which allows them to get the desired shape and dimension using a spinning and cutting tool which is generally known as a milling cutter. It differs from a lathe machine over which a workpiece spins, leading to a movement of the cutting tool creating cylindrical shapes. In the case of the milling machine, it employs mills in the form of end mills, dovetail cutters, and various other types of milling cutters that are designed in order to work over flat and irregular surfaces, whether they are concave or convex surfaces. Milling machines are the type of products that are not at all complicated in terms of theory as a machine operator fastens a workpiece to the tool of the machine on the work table by using a work holding device that could be in the form of a clamp or a vise. The workpiece is supposed to work in a way that it moves through the X and Y axis as the milling cutter works in a way that the milling cutter removes the materials and the skilled workers or CNC program or CNC program by directing it on a manual or a CNC milling machine.

However, there are certain CNC processing parts that are necessary. These are in the form of parts like:

Column and Base

There is a cast iron column, and a base supports the other parts of the milling operations in a way that the column rests on the base in a way that it usually houses the oil and the coolant system. The base is a foundation that is designed in order to carry the weight of everything that is there on the machine. While in the case of the column, it is designed in a way that it directly the weight of the knee and the work table. Thus, the weight of both these components ensures that there is minimum vibration and better finishing on the surface even after the heaviest cuts.

Knee

The knee is the part that is attached to the column by the dovetail ways. It is suggested up and down with the use of an elevating screw. This is also known as a vertical positioning screw that works in a way that it runs vertically from the base. However, vertical movement can also be achieved by either the use of a hand crank or even a power feed. The handle works in a way that it moves the saddle in a transverse direction that could either be cross feed or even in the form of in and out. This part is also located over the knee, whereas the gearing mechanism is enclosed within the knee. In the other type of milling machines, we get to see that there I a power table that is fed in the transverse direction, even though this part is also located over the knee.

The saddle that is located on the top of the knee moves in transverse to the column, and it provides motion in both the horizontal and the vertical direction. It is also made up of cast iron.

Power Feed Mechanism

The power feed mechanism is the part that is contained in the knee. It is something that is used in order to control longitudinal (left and right), transverse (in and out), and vertical (up and down) feeds that are being conducted. However, in the case of some milling machines, the rate of the feed can be changed in a way that they can turn the speed selection handle. In the case of most milling machines, they have a rapid transverse lever that can provide an increase in the speed of longitudinal, transverse, or vertical feeds that are supposed to be formed.

Work Table

As suggested by the name, most of the machining work that is performed is performed over the table. The table is usually in the form of a rectangular piece of iron with the availability of the T slots that are there for the purpose of clamping a workpiece directly to it. The parts of the work handle include the variable speed power feed and the handles. It also has an X- axis leadscrew that is located on the underside of the table and can engage with a nut so that it can assist the table in a way that it can support its horizontal movement either with the use of power or manually.

Ram

The ram is a type of moveable and overhanging arm that hangs over a vertical milling machine. This part of the machine is mounted on the top of the column, attaching the milling head to one end. In the case of the milling machines, the operator can extend and swivel that rams in a way that it can.

Overhanging Arm

The overhanging arm is the part that is usually known as the overarm, which is in the form of a horizontal cast iron beam that is usually on the top of the column over a horizontal milling machine that is usually seen to be sliding over the dovetail way.
